Protect e-commerce transactions and reinforce customer trust with SSL Certificates. SSL certificates keep online interactions private even though they travel across the public internet, helping customers gain the confidence to transact with your website.
Doing business online without SSL is like leaving customer credit card numbers on the counter or offering a dressing room without a door.
SSL is the acronym for Secure Sockets Layer and is the Internet standard security technology used to establish an encrypted (or safe) link between a web server (website) and your browser. This secured link ensures that the data/information passed from your web browser to the web server remains private; meaning safe from hackers or anyone trying to spy/steal that info. SSL is the industry standard and is used by millions of websites to protect and secure any sensitive or private data.
To establish a secured SSL connection on a web server, it requires an SSL Certificate to be properly installed. When completing the process to activate SSL, you will be asked to complete a number of questions to verify the identity of your domain and your company. Once properly completed, your web server will create 2 types of cryptographic keys – a Private Key and a Public Key.
The Public Key isn’t a secret and is placed into a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). Once this CSR is generated, the Certification Authority (CA) will go through a validation process to verify your details and issue an SSL Certificate. Your web server will automatically match the CA-issued SSL Certificate to your Private Key, establishing an encrypted link.
SSL protocol is complex, but the complexities always remain invisible to your customers. The browser provides a key indicator letting them know their session is currently protected—sometimes a lock icon, the addition of an “s” in https, or a green bar on high-end EV Certificates.
Generally speaking, SSL Certificates include your domain name, company name, address, and the CA details. A browser retrieves the site's SSL Certificate, ensures it has not expired, checks if it was issued by a trusted CA, and verifies it matches the website. If any parameter fails, the browser displays a warning. That is the last thing you want potential customers to see, making SSL highly important to any successful web business.
The number of businesses using SSL has increased tremendously, and the reasons for using SSL have also evolved. Some need it simply for encryption, while others use it to build trust and prove their legal identity. Three different types of SSL Certificates have been established:
Issued only when a CA conducts a THOROUGH vetting (investigation) of the organization. The CA must verify the legal, physical & operational existence of the entity, ensure the identity matches official records, verify exclusive domain rights, and authorize issuance. EV Certificates are used by all business types, including government entities. Takes about 10 days to issue.
Issued after a CA verifies the domain rights plus some vetting of the organization. This vetted company info is displayed to customers when the Secure Site Seal is clicked, enhancing visibility and trust in the site. Takes about 2 days to issue.
Issued when the CA checks to make sure the applicant has the right to the specific domain name. No company identity information is vetted. DV certs can be issued almost immediately.
